Madeira Walking Football hosts Jo Harwood from PNE WF
On Monday, December 11th, the Madeira Walking Football (MWF) team had a special training session with a distinguished guest: Jo Harwood from PNE (Preston North End) WF, who was capped by the England women’s over-60s team. Jo was the 35th visitor to our MWF sessions on the island of Madeira this year, as part of the MWF’s initiative to promote walking football in the region.
Jo Harwood is a passionate walking football player who has represented England in international tournaments. She came to Madeira to enjoy the island’s natural beauty and culture, as well as to share her experience and skills with the local team. She said: “I was delighted to be invited by the MWF to join their training session. They are a very friendly and enthusiastic group of players, who made me feel very welcome. I had a lot of fun playing with them and learning about their different EFDN rules, which are slightly different from the ones we use in England. I think walking football is a great way to stay fit, healthy and social, and I encourage everyone to give it a try.”
Walking football is a variant of association football that is aimed at keeping people aged over 50 involved with the sport, by playing at a walking pace and with minimal contact. It is a popular activity in Madeira, where the MWF team was founded in 2021 by Phill Bellamy.
The MWF team is always open to welcome new players and visitors, who want to experience walking football in a friendly and relaxed environment.
MWF: “We train every Monday and Friday morning at the Centro Desportivo da Madeira in Ribeira Brava, and also participate in regional and national tournaments. We also have a website and a Facebook page, where we share news, photos and videos of their activities.“
“If you are interested in joining or visiting our MWF team, you can contact us through our website or Facebook page, or by email at info@madeirawalkingfootball.com.”
